The Trump Administration’s Anti-Transgender Hate
In a stunning attack on transgender people, the Trump Administration is looking to legally codify gender as a characteristic determined at birth. The Department of Health and Human Services is working to ensure that government agencies consider gender “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.”
This extraordinary move will unravel progress from the Obama era, when government agencies modified policies in order to provide transgender individuals with the same rights and services as anyone else.
Beyond scaling back the small degree of progress the country has made, Trump’s violent bigotry will only exacerbate a social climate that already marginalizes transgender people. Nearly 50 percent of transgender respondents confirmed that they have been victims of sexual assault in one study. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 29 trans individuals were killed in 2017 in acts of anti-transgender bigotry. States have worked to bar people from using bathrooms that coordinate with their gender, essentially criminalizing individuals when they take care of their most basic bodily needs.
By trying to erase transgender people from existence, the federal government will further disenfranchise a vulnerable population and empower businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations to discriminate against transgender people.
This is not acceptable. There has already been an immense show of solidarity and support for the transgender community since the Trump Administration announced its troubling plans. Look up public demonstrations in your area and write to your elected leaders. Also consider contributing to these amazing organizations working toward equality for transgender people:
